Good afternoon, staff and students,

This is Principal Alvarado with an important announcement about Monday’s solar eclipse and important reminders for safety that day.  The first total solar eclipse visible in North America since 1979 will take place this Monday, August 21, 2017.  From the time the eclipse begins at 9:05 a.m. until the time it ends at 11:45 a.m., students and staff may be curious to see this scientific phenomenon.

We look forward to experiencing this event with you, but it is essential that we all do so with the utmost attention to safety.  Looking directly at the sun, even when it is partially covered by the moon, can cause serious eye damage or blindness.  Please be reminded to never look at a partial solar eclipse without certified eye protection.  Your sunglasses or attempts to shade your eyes DO NOT provide the protection you need.

As a precaution, we will keep PE classes inside on Monday until the eclipse passes.  In our area about 50% of the sun will be eclipsed by 10:20 a.m. before the eclipse begins to recede.  The sky may appear somewhat darker, but may be unnoticeable to some.   Keep in mind that it is safe to be outside on Monday.  It is looking at the sun to try to see the eclipse that presents a risk to your eyesight.

Many of you will be able to experience the Eclipse in your Cav Academy Class.  Please make sure you have your signed permission slip.  We have permission slips available in the front office and on our website.

Some of teachers may choose to show the eclipse via a livestream from NASA.

Thank you, and again, I look forward to SAFELY experiencing this fascinating astronomical phenomenon with you on Monday.

NASA has provided numerous resources regarding the eclipse on their website.  For additional information, the following links may be consulted:
